This drawing demonstrates Baldassare Peruzzi’s mastery of the Italian Renaissance principle of disegno—drawing, or design. The commanding figure in the center is Justice, who gracefully balances a scale in one hand and holds a lance in the other. The curious details of an omniscient eye and a floating hand are perhaps remnants of earlier sketches that Peruzzi left as he experimented with this imaginative composition on what was once considered an expensive commodity: paper. Notice the grid Peruzzi drew to aid in transferring the composition to a larger format.
