This excellent example of an African American Reconstruction-era quilt depicts two biblical scenes in opposite sections: Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and the Crucifixion. Bible quilts like this are usually symbolic in nature and are creative interpretations of oral imagery passed down through generations. The appliquéd letters J and C stand for Jesus Christ; A, E, and G represent Adam, Eve, and the Garden of Eden. As is often the case with quilts of this nature, other letters remain subject to interpretation.
