Jackie Winsor’s laboriously handcrafted sculptures contrast with the impersonal, machine-made works of most Minimalist sculptors. Like them, she employs simple geometric forms, but her work is unusual in its hands on working process, its use of materials such as rope, and its references to nature. The simple form of Double Bound Circle holds its muscular strength and complexity in check and possesses a sense of self containment. Addressing her rope pieces, Winsor observed, “You related to them the way you might relate to a sleeping person—to the potential energy that is manifested in a dormant state.”
