Vansant & Co. was listed as silversmiths in 1850, advertising as manufacturers and sellers of silverware. Though a short-lived firm, they catered to a sophisticated clientele. American silver in the Aesthetic taste is rare, and this entree dish is distinguished by its excellent craftmanship as well as its superb and unusual design. It demonstrates the high quality of 19th century silver made in Philadelphia.
