One of the most influential designers in modern Japanese history, Shiro Kuramata is best known for his poetic, lighthearted designs. The forms made from modern industrial materials such as acrylic, aluminum, and steel mesh appear to break free from the grip of gravity and transcend to a world of weightlessness and light. This dissolution of the solid and desire for the appearance of weightlessness is a fundamental and recurring theme in Kuramata’s work. The Feather Stool was originally conceived for Spiral, a Tokyo gallery and shopping complex.
