Philip-Lorca diCorcia explores the blurry line between staged and candid photographic documents. Using an elaborate arrangement of remote lighting and long telephoto lens, diCorcia spontaneously photographed people as they traversed the crowded streets of New York’s Times Square. These anonymous passersby are unaware, lost in their thoughts while dramatically set against an unlit black background. Satisfying our innate curiosity about others, diCorcia’s technique allows us to observe his subjects with a close scrutiny that would be considered impolite with friends, not to mention strangers.
