This elegant portrait depicts the famous Swedish soprano Jenny Lind, whose international celebrity reached epic proportions following her 1850 American tour with popular entertainer P. T. Barnum. Sculptor Margaret Foley carved Lind in a low-relief tondo (round) setting and in profile, mimicking the preferred format for depictions of European nobility during the Renaissance. Yet Foley also shows Lind wearing Etruscan-style earrings and a pendant inscribed “Roma,” drawing connections between this profile portrait and cameo designs based on classical traditions.
