This printed image by Cornelis Galle II is after a painted portrait of Maria Anna of Spain (1606-1646), wife of Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor, by Anthony van Dyck. Maria Anna is depicted half-length, seated in a chair. She holds a fan, wears a ruff, cuffs, and coat, and is heavily bejeweled with opals in her elaborately styled hair, her earrings, buttons, and chain. Behind her, robust drapery can be seen to the left and a crown to the right, both further signaling Maria Anna’s wealth and status.
