An artist and educator based in Philadelphia, Amber Cowan creates work out of discarded scrap glass that she cleverly refashions alongside flea market finds to evoke the rich history of the American glassblowing industry. In Melanie Walking Snail with Cart, she overlays glass leaves, ribbons, and flowers as a backdrop to the faux pastoral scene of a female figure and snail transporting a cart of mushrooms while a horse rests nearby. The picked mushrooms and glass assemblage gesture to the practices of gathering and reusing that are central to Cowan’s artistic message of renewal.
