Won Ju Lim’s series of “Memory palaces” evoke the sparkle and glow of residential hillsides in Los Angeles in their combination of natural and architectural forms. The shadowy interiors of her lightboxes evoke associations with tales of romance and mystery. Lim titled the works after a mnemonic technique with roots in ancient Tibet wherein an imaginary location is constructed in the mind using images that trigger one’s recall. As in a dream, the haunting quality of Lim’s imaginary landscapes is ambiguous. Do they depict Hollywood fantasies of images of catastrophe and ruin?
