Nicolai Cikovsky left Russia for the United States in 1923 in the turbulent aftermath of the Russian Civil War. He settled in New York and by the 1930s was exhibiting at the progressive art spaces of Edith Halpert’s Downtown Gallery and the Whitney Museum of American Art. A poignant depiction of laid-off workers sitting idle on a city pier, No Jobs offers a gripping view of working-class people’s struggles during the Great Depression.
