Like a set-up shot in a movie, this image anchors the beginning of the story in the real world: the location is a roller rink in modern Berlin, frequented by elegant ladies and gentlemen. Klinger inserts himself on the far left (with the dark beard) beside his painter friend Hermann Pell. Anecdotal details, such as a small dog and a woman who has fallen down, underscore the normality of this beginning.
