For her series Purple Domino (2015–2017), Courtney Asztalos photographed older women absorbed in the experience of gambling in casinos in New York, Nevada, and Florida. Encountering her subjects by chance, Asztalos composed her images at close range using direct flash that, when blended with the intensely surreal colors of the surrounding casino lighting, amplifies every detail of her subjects’ captivated facial expressions and flamboyant dress. The resulting photographs speak to shifting codes of femininity and notions of desire mediated by consumer culture.
