In his portfolio "Small Worlds" (Kleine Welten), Wassily Kandinsky explored the distinct possibilities of three print techniques: drypoint, lithography, and woodcut. The portfolio of twelve prints includes six lithographs, two woodcuts, and four drypoints, of which "Small Worlds XI" (Kleine Welten XI) is one. Kandinsky considered drypoint the most "aristocratic" technique on account of its sharp, precise lines—such as those seen in this print—and its limited edition sizes.
