At the center of the Reverend Howard Finster’s imaginative, spiritual universe was his Paradise Garden, an amazing four-acre art environment of buildings, follies, and found-object assemblages. The Garden’s inlaid pathways were festooned with shiny garlands, colorful gourds, and these shimmering, mirror-studded assemblages, which Finster called his “sun catchers.” Describing his frequent use of mirror fragments, Finster once explained, “It’s like looking at a spirit floating in the air.”
