Alongside his medical career as a surgeon, Seymour Haden was an etcher and avid proponent of the so-called Etching Revival in the late-nineteenth century. Haden wrote that the line of the etching needle was "free, expressive, full of vivacity," akin to drawing as opposed to engraving, whose burin marks were "cold, constrained, uninteresting" and "without identity." This etching represents a landscape of cottages and trees in Kew, an area near London, along the River Thames. Haden published the image in his series Etching Studies (Études à l’eau-forte) under the title "Thames Side at Kew."
