This sculpture is one of dozens of objects in the High’s collection that came from Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden. This sculpture of a young lion lying down with the calves evokes the biblical image of the “Peaceable Kingdom,” a time of great harmony on earth. The Calf and the Young Lion greeted visitors at the front gate of Paradise Garden and was among the countless spiritual images that appeared throughout Finster’s modern-day, cautionary Garden of Eden.
