In this series of etchings, Rudzani Nemasetoni repurposes his father’s identification passbook—the official document that both facilitated and restricted movement for Black South Africans from rural areas to urban centers. In using this most visible of oppressive objects of the apartheid system, Nemasetoni explores the intersection of personal and collective memories. This print even includes the image of his father’s face.
