Originally trained as a painter during the postwar period dominated by Abstract Expressionism, ceramic artist Viola Frey began making monumental figurative ceramics in the late 1970s. Frey explores the culture and kitsch of postwar America by scaling up the figurines typical of domestic decoration. This work was shown in her solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1984, one of the most important shows in establishing her reputation.
