Pot for Her
British, born India, 1954
Known for his lyrical, abstract sculptures, Anish Kapoor states, “I wish to make sculpture about belief, or about passion—about experience that is outside of material concern.” Pot for Her beautifully demonstrates the dualities characteristic of Kapoor’s art. The recumbent blue form is simultaneously figurative and abstract, phallic and vaginal, organic and geometric. The work’s title and swelling middle imply that it is some sort of vessel. Its opening is hidden, however, rendering the interior an imagined space full of mysterious possibilities.
