American, born 1957
From the time Laura Craig McNellis was very young, those around her realized that she had both an intellectual disability and a profound enthusiasm for painting. Her talent has developed as she has continued to paint, laying poster paint and inexpensive watercolors on blank newsprint with rapid strokes. Her striking drawings record the people, objects, and events of her everyday life with bold and vivid forms. This image of a dress is part of a recent series in which McNellis depicted ordinary garments with extraordinary results.
