Description

Regarding his particular vision, Ellsworth Kelly said, “Instead of making a picture that was an interpretation of a thing seen, or a picture of invented content, I found an object and ‘presented’ it as itself alone.” Repudiating illusion and artifice, Kelly has consistently pursued a reductionist vision in which the edges of things are sharply delineated and the forms these edges enclose are flat, uninflected planes. To anchor the idea of flatness throughout the form, he often uses an overall single, evenly applied color or introduces white for the primary form, relegating color to the background or negative space.
