Join artist Larkin Ford as he leads drawing sessions that mix direct observation and printed reference images. Learn various methods of combining multiple image sources into one final drawing to create a cohesive piece. Stitch figures together to create a believable representation of reality, or flatten the world to give your drawings a collage-like effect.
All drawing levels welcome; supplies are included. Your ticket includes access to the Museum galleries, but does not include tickets to the Obama Portraits Tour exhibition.
March 12: From Abstract Mark-Making to Finished Drawing
Automatic drawing will lead our pencils as we build layers of abstract mark making. Within the layers, we’ll look for shapes and forms suggested by those lines—whether abstract or representational—and try to pull them out. Does the tangle of lines suggest a scene or a soup of half-formed imagery? Using references as needed, we will develop our abstract marks into three-dimensional scenes complete with texture, light, and shadow.
