Experiment with color, pattern, design, and composition while exploring a variety of fabric dyeing techniques. Practice tie-dyeing, painting dye directly onto fabric, and carving your own stamps to create bold new patterns that add character and depth to your textiles. Using the ice-dyeing technique, achieve watercolor-like effects as the dye drips and spreads throughout the fabric, and then create a design with needle and thread while learning the tritik resist-dyeing method.

  • Week 1: Begin with an introduction to the class and an overview of the dyeing methods that will be explored. Focus on creating designs using traditional tie-dyeing techniques.
  • Week 2: Explore adding designs and texture to textiles by painting with dye, carving your own stamps, and using texture plates to enhance your designs.
  • Week 3: Experiment with ice dyeing to create layered and vibrant effects in textiles.
  • Week 4: Discover the art of shibori, a Japanese resist-dyeing technique, to create intricate patterns. Conclude with a class discussion and reflection on the various techniques learned throughout the course.
