About Khari Cabral Simmons

Khari Cabral Simmons performing on a purple-lit stage.

Khari Cabral Simmons is a pioneer of Atlanta’s eclectic underground soul scene. In the mid-1990s, he cofounded the Atlanta collective Earthseed with friends India Arie, Sirius.B, Anasa Troutman, and Donnie.

After the group disbanded, Khari remained an in-demand bassist, playing alongside the likes of Gaelle, Donnie, Roy Ayers, and Russell Gunn, and eventually signing on as India Arie’s bassist in early 2000. When India Arie was offered the opening act of Sade’s Lovers Rock tour, she invited Khari to join her on the road; after the three-month tour, Khari became a full-time member of her band.

As a recording artist, Khari has garnered a reputation for crafting Brazilian-influenced soul sounds with his band Jiva and now in his solo career. His collaborations on many musical projects have included work with Monday Michiru, Bluey from Incognito, Cecilia Stalin of Koop, Chantae Cann, Brenda Nicole Moorer, Grant Green Jr., and Sabrina Malheiros.

In his latest EP, Soul Bossa, Khari continues exploring his unique style of soul bossa, paying homage to musicians like Burt Bacharach, Sérgio Mendes, and Quincy Jones.
