Event Description

In connection with Monir Farmanfarmaian: A Mirror Garden, this online class will examine the diverse artistic and cultural contributions of artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (1922–2019) within the historical context of Iranian and global art practice since the 1940s. Led by Kaveh Rafie and Leili Adibfar, PhD candidates at the University of Illinois Chicago, class sessions will focus on the artist’s early life and work in Iran, her experience of living and working in New York, and her participation in culturally diplomatic exchanges between the two nations. The class will review Farmanfarmaian’s vast experimentations with various media and techniques, including reverse glass painting and mirror work, as well as the legacy of mirror work in contemporary Iranian art.

About Your Instructors

Kaveh Rafie is a PhD candidate specializing in modern and contemporary art at the University of Illinois Chicago. His dissertation charts the course of modern art in Late Pahlavi Iran (1941–1979) and explores the extent to which the 1953 coup marks the recuperation of modern art as a viable blueprint for cultural globalization in Iran.

Leili Adibfar earned a master’s degree in English from Loyola University Chicago and is a PhD candidate in art history at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her primary research is focused on the art of modern Iran and the role that global art practices and theories, in conversation with local artistic and cultural traditions, played in Late Pahlavi Iran (1941–1979).
