Mindful Art Making
Drop in for our art-making activities from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This month’s workshop features the drawing game Cadavre Exquis, otherwise known as Exquisite Corpse. The game allows you and others to take turns and draw an image together to make an entirely new creation.
Seeing with Spirit
Join us for a casual, thoughtful conversation connecting art and spiritual practice.
Each month, a faith, spiritual, or contemplative practitioner joins a High staff member in a conversation centered on a work of art and the ways it invites deeper reflection into their contemplative practice.
Louis Burrell is an orator and wellness coach whose instruction embodies the principles of Sanskrit philosophies, particularly the Ashtanga and Kundalini practices. His spirituality is best emphasized through his global wellness program Just Breathe Universe, which sees breath work as a vehicle for mind and body transformation. He is a founding member of Undugu, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a supportive space for men of color driven by South African humanist philosophies. Burrell received his BA in education and MA in curriculum and instruction from Clark Atlanta University and holds certification in Chopra well-being instruction, Ayurveda health, and meditation leadership and instruction.
Join the conversation at 12:00 and 1:00 p.m.
Soundscapes
Immerse yourself in peaceful sounds as you rediscover our Modern and Contemporary Art galleries.
This month, join classically trained vocal artist, improvisor, and composer Mali Irene (aka Malesha Taylor Browning) for a musical experience using her four-octave voice and electronic loop pedal. Her work centers on an inspired continuum between classical, jazz, world, and electronic music. Known for her exceptional range and ability to sing in multiple languages, Irene received the prestigious National Black Arts Festival Horizon Award for Music in 2022. Irene is currently in residence with the American Composers Orchestra. In concert music, she has also performed as a soloist with John Williams’s film concert tour Lord of the Rings. She holds degrees from the University of Southern California and California State University.
Tarot Table
Curious about what’s in the cards for you as the seasons change?
Meredith White, a nonbinary and queer tarot reader, will offer tarot readings for purchase in the Lower Level of the Stent Family Wing. You do not need any prior experience with tarot to participate, and these sessions are safe and accessible for all bodies. White has worked with tarot for over eight years as a tool for affirmation, self-reflection, and collective liberation. White comes to the practice with gentleness to create space for change, healing, and self-advocacy.
Labyrinth
This labyrinth, designed by artist Steven L. Anderson, may look like a maze, but it is not meant to confuse or frustrate you. The labyrinth is a nearly 4,000-year-old design that has been found in a variety of forms and cultures. We invite you to use this labyrinth for walking meditation and contemplation.
Community Spotlight
Each month, the museum shines a spotlight on a community organization that partners with the High’s Learning and Civic Engagement department to help extend creativity and civic connection across Atlanta. This month, we are highlighting Undugu.
Undugu is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a safe and supportive space for men of color to speak freely, share their experiences, and be authentically themselves. Undugu organizes in-person meetups like hikes, museum visits, and other out-and-about events. The organization understands how the voices of men of color are marginalized or misunderstood, and aims to provide an environment free of ego, judgment, and societal pressures, where honest dialogue and genuine connection are not only encouraged but celebrated. Undugu is founded by Jermail Shelton, the coleader of just add honey tea company, which has served Oasis since its inception.
Food and Drinks
just add honey is an Atlanta-based small business that offers blended loose-leaf teas for all to enjoy. Since 2006, they’ve combined single-origin loose-leaf teas from small-batch farms with local or organic ingredients to make refined flavors. They will be offering a selection of zero-proof teas available for purchase.
La Bodega is a local Atlanta-based small business that serves pupusas, the national dish of El Salvador. Since 2013, they have offered this unique gluten-free product in vegan, vegetarian, meat-friendly, dairy-free, breakfast, and kid-friendly options.
