Event Description

Dr. Susan Behrends Frank headshot.European Masterworks: The Phillips Collection opens at the High Museum of Art on April 6, 2019. Dr. Susan Behrends Frank, curator at The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, will give the opening lecture for the exhibition.

Established in Washington, DC, at the end of World War I by the young collector Duncan Phillips (1886-1966), The Phillips Collection has always been dedicated to the idea of modernism as a dialogue between the past and the present.  A pioneer in many ways, Phillips had a keen enthusiasm for the art of his time. Relying on his eye for great talent and potential, he assembled a world-class collection that he believed could be understood as “an American Prado.”

Dr. Frank’s lecture will provide insights into the evolution of Phillips’s eye and his determination to create an “experiment station” for modernism in the nation’s capital.
