Sensory-Friendly Evening
October 16, 2024 | 6–9 p.m.

We invite adults of all ages who identify as disabled or neurodivergent to join us along with their friends and family for Sensory-Friendly Evening. This after-hours program includes art-making workshops, an educator-led conversation, guides for exploring on your own, and light refreshments. Experience world-class art, be creative, explore the museum at your own pace, or simply enjoy spending time with friends and family in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
Space is limited to reduce crowds, and preregistration is required.
A Sensory Guide and Social Story are available to help you prepare for your visit.

Visit us at the Welcome Table for more information on what to do in the museum or to pick up a sensory map, event program, or gallery guide. Headphones, sunglasses, fidgets, and other materials will be available for use during your visit.
Relaxation Room
Greene Family Education Center, Lower Level, Yellow Workshop | 6–9 p.m.
Take a break in our Relaxation Room, where you can enjoy soft lighting, tactile materials, and calming sounds.
Open Studio: Pastel Pencil Drawings
Greene Family Education Center, Red Workshop | 6:30–8:30 p.m.
Experiment with different pastel pencil techniques, including hatching and crosshatching, color mixing by layering and smudging, and lightening and darkening colors. Drawing inspiration from artists like Mary Cassatt, you can explore materials and create unique drawings from things you bring with you or images from your phone. Try out materials on your own or with guidance from High Museum of Art educators.
This drop-in pastel color exploration will take place in a room with low lighting. Materials will be provided, including gloves, pastel pencils, adaptive tools, and paper. No prior experience is necessary.
Independent Art Making: Paper Sculptures
Wieland Pavilion and Stent Family Wing, Skyway Level | 6–9 p.m.
We will explore several types of paper to make sculptures. Looking to artists such as Mark di Suvero and Heide Fasnacht for inspiration, we will first transform paper with our hands by folding, tearing, and rolling it to make different shapes. We will then assemble our shapes with techniques such as stacking, leaning, and slot-joining to make sculptures of imaginative forms.
This drop-in art-making session will take place in the galleries at the Skyway Level of the Stent Family Wing and Wieland Pavilion with bright lighting. Materials will be provided, including gloves, various textured papers, thick and thin colored construction paper and cardstock, hole punchers, and paper fasteners. No prior experience is necessary.
Art Conversation: Through Lines
Stent Family Wing, Second and Third Levels | 7:30–8 p.m.
How do different artworks approach similar ideas in unique ways? In these lively conversations, we will explore two different pieces to connect art across time, geography, identity, and belief.
Through Lines meets at the first artwork location and lasts no more than thirty minutes. Please see below for times, artworks, and locations. Stools and assistive listening devices will be available and are highly recommended.
Camille Pissarro, Mother Jolly Mending (La Mère Jolly raccommodant) (1874), Stent Family Wing, Second Level
