Studio Sessions: Carving Out Meaning through Printmaking

During this workshop, we will draw inspiration from works on view in Bruce Onobrakpeya: The Mask and the Cross to create intricate, layered works of art using the linoleum block printing technique. Onobrakpeya, known for his innovative printmaking techniques, has created numerous works marrying Nigerian artistic traditions, folklore, and cosmology with Catholic motifs and stories from the Bible. Similarly, we will carve out designs and patterns to create symbolic works that hold cultural, personal, or spiritual meaning. This workshop is offered twice.
Studio Sessions occur throughout the year. These one-off art-making workshops are an opportunity to experiment, play, and enjoy dabbling with new mediums, connected to artworks on view at the High. All materials are provided, and no prior experience is required. Studio Sessions are designed for adults, but all ages are welcome.

About Your Instructor
A recent transplant to Georgia, Jaffia Royes is a visual artist and art educator who lived and worked in New York City for seventeen years. She earned her bachelor’s in studio art with a focus in painting from Florida State University. As an educator, she has worked with various art organizations, museums, and schools and has taught artists of all ages, including portfolio development for artists entering art and design colleges and universities. She also facilitates professional development workshops for visual art educators. In her own art, her primary medium for over two decades has been oil. In addition to painting, she finds enjoyment in continually expanding her skill set and is currently delving into sculpting, wood carving, and photography.
