Events: Studio Sessions: Off the Grid

Event Description

In this studio workshop, participants will experiment with the design principles and formal elements on view in Off the Grid. The session will begin with a walkthrough of the show to examine the dynamics and interrelationships of form in the diverse media and collection objects, including quilts, drawings, paintings, and photographs. Participants will then proceed to the studio to create their own visual designs based on a grid structure, thinking through the qualities of doubling, pattern, sequence, repetition, contrast, and variations of color and shape.

Studio Sessions are designed for adults, but all ages are welcome. Materials will be provided, including colored paper, vellum, rubber cement, X-Acto knives, scissors, and colored pencils, among others. No prior experience is necessary.

This session will meet in the Anne Cox Chambers Wing lobby. After presenting your ticket at the Admissions Desk, please make your way outside the Museum entrance and to the Anne Cox Chambers Wing to the right.

About Your Instructor

Nell Ruby is an active artist, citizen, and professor of studio art at Agnes Scott College, where she’s been teaching forms of making for twenty-five years. In her creative work, she uses mixed media to construct architectural spaces where boundaries and edges are playfully obscured and willfully chaotic. In her teaching, she is interested in engaging creative processes as a way to think through, envision, and produce images, objects, and habits that challenge and build culture.
