Audrey and Michael Landy began collecting in 1978 with a passion for contemporary ceramics. The Atlanta-based, long term supporters of the High Museum of Art gifted their significant collection of predominantly figurative ceramic works to the High in 2012. In celebration of The Landy Collection gift, this installation offers a glimpse into the international studio craft movement that often blurs the boundaries between sculpture and craft.
Featuring renowned artists like Viola Frey, Rudy Autio, and Akio Takamori, this gift of 40 works provides an important counterpoint to the non-figurative works of studio craft already in the High’s permanent collection. The works on view will exemplify the Landy’ vision as collectors and showcase a range of key moments in their collecting history, including the Mary Frank Women with Wave as the first object added to their collection, and the Peter Voulkos plate that emerged from the same kiln firing as the High’s untitled example (currently on view).
