American Impressionism

By the final decades of the nineteenth century, many American painters had moved away from a strict academic style in favor of looser brushwork and a new focus on the effects of atmosphere and light. The High Museum’s American Impressionist collection began with major gifts from the J. J. Haverty Family and has grown to include works by Mary Cassatt, Theodore Robinson, Lilla Cabot Perry, and John Singer Sargent.
