Harry Callahan
Many cities claim the great photography innovator and teacher Harry Callahan (American 1912–1999) as their own. A native of Detroit, Callahan influenced generations of photographers through teaching positions at the Institute of Design in Chicago and the Rhode Island School of Design, and he became a local luminary in Atlanta during his final years. Spanning portraiture, landscape, and street photography, Callahan’s work is marked by his penchant for experimentation and elegant sense of composition. The High Museum holds over 150 photographs by Callahan, making it one of the most important repositories of his work.
