'Red Combustion III' by Lynda Benglis

The Vogel Collection

Dorothy (born 1935) and Herbert (1922–2012) Vogel collected minimalist, conceptual, and post-1960s art for over four decades. They used Dorothy’s income as a reference librarian for living expenses and Herbert’s postal clerk salary to acquire contemporary art. In 2008, with the assistance of the National Gallery of Art, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Vogels divided a gift of 2,500 works among museums in each of the fifty states. The High Museum of Art was among the first recipients selected. Included in the Vogels’ gift are works by Stephen Antonakos, Lynda Benglis, Betty Woodman, and Richard Tuttle.
