David Driskell is one of the most important and beloved American artists, recognized for his vibrant and versatile painting and printmaking practice, which combines his sharp observation of American landscapes and his interest in the imagery and aesthetic innovations of the African diaspora.

In February 2021, the High will present David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History, a major retrospective of Driskell’s paintings and works on paper, addressing recurring subjects such as the natural world and remembrances of the Southern black experience and the black Christian church. The exhibition will present over 60 works spanning 7 decades of David’s remarkable artistic career and features paintings from both public and private collections, including rarely seen works from the artist’s own collection.

In celebration of this special exhibition, and in recognition of the lasting impact of David’s legacy on the High and our Atlanta arts community, the Museum has created the Patrons of David Driskell: Icons of Nature and History to engage and recognize individual donors in support of this notable exhibition.
