An active photojournalist during the civil rights movement in the United States, Karales was developing several photographic series for "LOOK" magazine at the time this image was made. Included in the High’s exhibition "Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956–1968," this image provides an unusual perspective on the Selma to Montgomery March, as it shows the reaction of a family watching the march from their front porch.
