Introduction to Mixed Media Collage
October 7 – October 28, 2025 | 1:30–4 p.m.

Learn principles of design while playing and experimenting with collage materials and techniques. Make collages with torn and cut shapes from paper and fabric, and create collage materials using ink, paint, and texture rubbings. Learn how to select discarded printed materials for use in collage, and experiment with image transfers. Throughout the class, create a series of collages based on observation and connections to personal experience using expressive shapes, textures, and colors.
Week 1: Begin with an introduction to the collage processes that will be explored. Draw with scissors and tear paper to create collage compositions considering paper edges, shape, and negative space.
Week 2: Make your own collage materials through texture rubbings and ink pouring in addition to painting paper and fabric. Create small-size collage compositions on shaped supports, combining the materials you made with colored paper and textures.
Week 3: Collect and select discarded printed materials, and experiment with image transfer methods to further develop thematic and compositional ideas in your collages.
Week 4: Complete your collage compositions using a combination of previously explored techniques and materials. We will conclude our time together with a discussion about our work and a reflection on what we have learned.
About Studio Classes
Expand your art-making skills through guided, step-by-step instruction with expert teaching artists. Over multiple weeks, you will learn alongside other creative adults and delve deeply into the artistic process, explore new techniques, and build your practice.
This is an introductory-level Studio Class; it is designed to accommodate all levels of skill and talent. If you have never taken a drawing class before, this is a great place to start. You will learn new skills that you can use in your artistic practice.
The registration fee includes all materials, weekly access to world-class art in the museum’s galleries, hours of expert instruction, and access to a Friday afternoon Open Studio during the run of the class. Participants will also have the opportunity to exhibit select works in a Studio Classes student exhibition opening in December.
About your Instructor
Daniel Mantilla is a Colombian-born artist with over a decade of experience teaching young people, families, and adults. In his paintings, drawing-collages, and cutouts, Mantilla explores ideas of transition and instability. He previously lived in New York City, where he recorded instructional videos for public television. His art has been exhibited across the United States and internationally. He has studied paintings in museum collections in Spain, conducted research on cadmium-free acrylic paint, and holds an MFA from Hunter College.

Learn new ways to create paintings while experimenting with color systems and texture. Work from observation, memory, and imagination as you begin mixing colors using warm and cool color palettes. Explore brushstrokes, mark making, and value, and study color hue and saturation using a primary color wheel. Create a painting by combining methods for color mixing, color application, and texture learned throughout the class.
