Mi Casa, Your Casa

Overview
Through November 30, the High invites Atlanta to enjoy the interactive installation Mi Casa, Your Casa. Located in the center of the Woodruff Arts Center’s campus on the Carroll Slater Sifly Piazza, the installation features 36 three-dimensional, open frames in the shape of a house.
The houses form a blank canvas for community engagement and activity in a basic form recognizable and relatable to all – the home. Created by contemporary Mexican designers Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena, the vibrant red houses invite visitors to be a part of the art.
Mi Casa, Your Casa is a welcoming space where visitors can play, create and relax in a hammock. The installation also becomes a stage for performances and a place for art-making. Every weekend through November 2 for the run of the installation we host family art-making workshops from 1 to 4 p.m. in the houses with hands-on projects that connect to works of art in the Museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.
The Woodruff divisions (Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Arts for Learning) utilize the installation for performances, youth education and more. The High is also collaborating with artists and performers from across the Atlanta arts spectrum to enliven the space. These highly unique and original collaborations will allow visitors to experience some of Atlanta’s most compelling artists in exciting new combinations as they explore new territory and branch out in fresh and unexpected directions to bring the Piazza to life with art.
This pilot project is part of a two-year initiative to activate the Piazza and engage the community in the vibrant campus of the Woodruff Arts Center. Esrawe and Cadena will design a second installation for the Piazza for the summer of 2015.

Designers in Residence
Héctor Esrawe is an award-winning industrial designer as well as a celebrated furniture, interior, and product designer. Inspired by traditional Latin American design, architecture, and folk art, Esrawe’s works are playful, sometimes humorous, and organic. Winner of the Bienal Iberoamericana de Diseño (2010) in the Interior Design Spaces category, Esrawe has designed glassware for Nouvel Studio, with products available at Barneys New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, and the Walker Art Center.

Ignacio Cadena is creative director of his own firm Cadena + Asoc. Branding. Cadena’s collaborative designs explore the boundaries between art and science. Cadena has said of design that it “is not a luxury anymore, it is a necessity. Everything around us is design and should revolve around the direct and aesthetic benefit of humans and planet earth.” To this end, his designs focus on visual concepts influenced by the world around us.
