In addition to issues of representation, Richter also investigated the effects of photography on painting, as demonstrated in (799-1) Lesende. Lesende, or “The Reader” in English, depicts the artist’s wife reading a book. The composition, subject matter, and blurred, momentary quality of this work suggest a photographic source, yet the rich application of paint resolutely reminds the viewer that it is a painting.
