Diane Arbus is known for her frank portraits of people often living outside of societal norms, such as this genderqueer person at home. Either by choice or by circumstance, Arbus’s models often went unseen and misunderstood by members of mainstream society. Her practice was not only about documenting but also about making connections with people, and she often formed deep personal relationships with her subjects.
