As a child in rural Georgia, Dilmus Hall sculpted animals from available materials. He moved to Athens, Georgia, after serving in the U. S. Army Medical Corps during World War I, where he was exposed to European visual culture. Hall combined the icons of his Christian faith with an African-derived belief in the power of physical things. This synthesis of traditions produced objects of remarkable spiritual force, such as this dark and powerful depiction of the temptation of Eve.
