William Hawkins is well-represented in the High’s collection by five drawings and nine paintings. The painter introduced two techniques to his late work: adding collaged elements and “puffing out” the surface by applying paint mixed with sand or sawdust to add bulk. The assemblage method he used in All about Eve takes both those techniques a step further, puffing out the painting through the attachment of three-dimensional objects. The result is one of the most powerfully expressive works Hawkins ever produced.
