In its formal simplicity and sophisticated use of atmosphere, this austere scene teeters on the edge of abstraction. The jagged tracks in the snow may lead to an outlying building on the artist’s Connecticut farm, but the lack of specificity was deliberate. Twachtman used a cool, monochromatic color palette to create a motionless, atmospheric sense of space, and he deliberately abstracted the winter landscape.
