John William Casilear traveled to Europe in 1857 with a group of his artist friends and peers. He made Alpine Lake from studies drawn during this trip. The specific location of the lake pictured here is unknown, but it is thought to be scenic Lac Léman in Switzerland nestled in front of the snowcapped Bernese Alps. Casilear emphasized the light reflecting off the lake to give the painting a tranquil atmosphere.
