Lilla Cabot Perry trained in Boston among leading American Impressionists and later studied in France, where she met Claude Monet in 1889. She spent ten of the next twenty summers in Monet’s company and became one of his leading proponents in the United States. Perry painted this portrait of one of her favorite models in Giverny, an artists’ colony popular among Americans lured by Monet’s presence. The clearly defined figure posed in a freely brushed and light-filled setting typifies academic American Impressionism of the time.
