Following the success of their plywood furniture, Charles and Ray Eames turned to another cutting-edge material: fiberglass, thin strands of glass molded under extreme heat. Shaped into a bucket seat and covered in colorful molten plastic, their unupholstered fiberglass armchairs were surprisingly comfortable, easy to clean, and according to the press, “virtually indestructible and extremely light in weight.” The optional rocking chair base was marketed as “ideal for reading, relaxing, and use by the young mother.” In fact, the manufacturer, Herman Miller, gifted the rocker to the company’s employees who had recently become parents.
