Hendrick Goltzius was a master engraver himself but also provided drawings for other printmakers to produce. This personification of Avarice was part of a series of prints representing the seven deadly sins of Christian theology engraved by Goltzius’s stepson, Jacob Matham. Avarice reveals Goltzius’s Mannerist style in the figure’s unnatural elongation and her classical contrapposto pose, in which the upper body twists in one direction and the lower body, in the opposite direction. The plump money bags and fat toad (in a shield adorning the niche) are Avarice’s attributes.
