Debuted at the 1968 Milan Furniture Fair, the Blow armchair—made of electronically welded PVC plastic—was the first mass-produced and commercially successful piece of inflatable furniture. Designed for Zanotta, the firm behind the equally groundbreaking beanbag chair, Blow was produced in the thousands—sold folded and deflated (air pump and repair kit included)—and was lightweight enough to move around but sufficiently sturdy to support a sitter’s weight. The chair’s playful shape and do-it-yourself construction reflected the informality of radical Italian design and the nomadic lifestyle of youth culture during this period.
