Made of hundreds of broomcorn strands arranged like a disco ball, Broom Thing—created alongside students at Berea College in Kentucky—is a radical expression of a broom as a nonfunctional object. The brightly colored work—which emerged from Stephen Burks’s early aspirations of becoming a sculptor—embodies the transformative power of what is possible in craft when experimentation collides with tradition, rearranging everyday materials to create a work of art.
